MCDOWELL SAGE
is short for
SEXUALITY AND GENDER EQUALITY

Founded in February 2016, McDowell LGBTQA+
was intended to provide a safe community for those
identifying as queer in McDowell County, North Carolina.
In May of 2016, members voted to change the name of the group to
McDowell Sexuality And Gender Equality (SAGE).

We try to meet every so often to discuss a range of topics concerning the
LGBTQIA+ population, often over food, and check in with each other,
talk about local happenings, and make decisions on how to best serve our community.

We host an annual Friendsgiving Potluck + Coat Drive every November (not this year, COVID 19 ruins all the fun)
and sponsor events like Tie Dye days, Cookie Exchanges, bowling outings, and pizza/movie nights.

Our top priority is to build a strong, inclusive, community where members feel safe to express their sexuality and gender identities. We strongly believe in providing a safe and positive environment for those of all ages at all events. We are working to build a community and support a culture in which LGBTQIA+ people are equal in every part of daily life. Our work is rooted in our community, with a commitment to education and equity in gender, race, and socio-economic class.

Non-profit status
We are currently in the process of strategic planning to become a
501c3 non-profit organization in order to better serve our community.
We encourage all interested in what we do to attend an event and check out what we are all about.

NOV 3RD IS ELECTION DAY
~

Not quite sure what elections are open in your district?  Let us help out! 🏳️‍🌈
1. Search your name at https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/
2. Click on Sample Ballot and review your options.
Most local races are non-partisan today, which prompts more research than typical elections!
Look up candidate questionnaires in your local newspapers, google their names for past headlines, check out their social media, or look up their voter record.
All of this is public information
and takes just a few minutes to discern your preferred candidates for civic offices
3. If you show up to your polling location and your name cannot be found or is marked
INACTIVE for any reason, request a provisional ballot. It is your absolute right 🗳️
